It’s that time again where the government hold a Referendum to decide on legalizing same sex marriages and if the age of Presidential candidates should be lowered to 21 years These elections will be held on Friday 22nd May 2015.
It is very important for people of all ages to vote but there is a lack of young people between the ages of 18-25 years voting in elections or Referendums .
From experience of doing voting education talks with young people it seems that politics doesn’t interest them or they feel they wouldn’t be heard by local Councillors. This is untrue. Young people have lots of valid concerns and ideas which need to be heard by our government.
Polling stations around the country will be open from 7am -10pm on the day. Voting registration forms can be got from your local Garda Station (Gardaí will also advise you on accessible polling stations), these registration forms need to be completed by 1st May so you need to hurry if you want to have a vote in next month’s Referendum
These site www.spunout.ie will give you more information on how to vote, the registration process and the opinions of other young people why voting is important to them. These sites are very interesting and well worth a look if would like more to know more.
So come on everyone get out and vote on May 22nd and make your voices heard.
