First there was Ryan Sheridan, and now there is another singer-songwriter who hails from Monaghan, who I regard as very talented. His name is Barry Jay Hughes.
I first met Barry at the end of March. Barry became a full-time musician about four years ago. Previous to this, he was a restaurant manager but he gave it up to pursue music. I am delighted he made this decision because his talent is something that must be experienced. His main style of song writing is Folk Rock. His music inspirations are Glen Hansard, Wallis Bird and Jack L.
I have two of his CD’s This Way Up and Tried & Treasured. I am surprised I haven’t done damage to them as I have played them so much. Choosing a favourite original song of his is like choosing a favourite child but I do love the upbeat value of “Crying Shame”, the thought-provoking lyrics of “Full Circle” and “One Petal Down” and the subtle and soft sound of “Falling Moon”. Fiachna Ó Braonáin, TV Broadcaster and guitarist and vocalist with Hothouse Flowers, is quoted as saying, “I love Falling Moon… it’s the perfect late night track that should be heard in broad daylight too!”
He performs a lot of cover gigs around the country including Dublin and his hometown of Monaghan.
Barry has a great presence about him. You know that feeling you get when you meet your idol for the first time and you can’t talk but want to because they have such an ordinary nice way about them? That is the type of presence I mean. I have seen him a few times already. Anytime I have been to one of his shows/gigs, I admire the way he takes the time to chat to his fans before the show begins. Barry has a big appreciation for his fans. His level of interaction with the audience is amazing. There is a chance to make a request which is always fun because I have a keen interest in seeing how a singer covers someone else’s work. My personal favourite covers of his are “The Way You Make Me Feel” by Michael Jackson, “Walking in the Air” from the film The Snowman and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”…. I think I am officially allowed to mention the latter two as the season is pretty much upon us now!
You can head to Barry’s website, http://barryjayhughes.com/ to learn more about him. To watch Barry’s music videos, go to his YouTube channel Barry Jay Hughes OFFICIAL . If I haven’t convinced you of how brilliant he is by now then you should go and check out his material for yourself…. You can thank me later! 🙂
Barry will be playing in Limerick’s dog friendly Wine Bar and Arts Café, Chez Le Fab on Sunday 26th November from 2pm.
